The 2019 Minden High School Play Production cast and crew had the honor of taking on the task of telling a true story this year. The focus of this year’s play was an event in World War II history commonly referred to as the North Platte Canteen. The play was titled “The Coffee Pot Is On.” It was written by MHS play production director, Jeffrey Horner. The play tells the events of the North Platte Canteen, a stop on the railroad where local folks made sure every single soldier heading to war was given something to eat and drink along with a little love. The cast and crew embraced the story. They worked hard to become the story. They were very successful. More than 300 local patrons came out to the public performance of the play. Veterans were given free admission to the play that evening. In addition, the cast was pleased to find out that one of our very own Minden residents was a worker in the canteen. She attended the play that evening to relive her memories from so long ago. A week later, Minden won their own Minden High School Play Production Festival. They went on to place second at the Southwest Conference tournament held in Minden. A week later, they captured the District B-5 championship and punched their ticket to perform at the Johnny Carson Theater in Norfolk, Nebraska at the 2019 NSAA State Play Production Championships. The cast and crew gave their all and were rewarded with not only three outstanding acting awards (Hannah Boehler, Jakoby Loibl, and Maylee Kamery), but they were also awarded the NSAA Class B state runner up trophy. The story, however, doesn’t end there. Shortly after the state meet, a member of the community theater board of directors from North Platte invited the cast and crew to North Platte to perform the play at the historic Fox Theater only a few blocks away from where the true story actually took place. In January of 2020, the group finished their season by performing for the North Platte home crowd which included a number of descendants of folks who had worked in the canteen so many years ago. Some may argue that performing the play in North Platte was even more memorable than performing at the Nebraska State Play Production tournament. The entire season was a magical experience for the students as they helped one story of the kindness of Nebraskans live on.
